I first became interested in scrapbooks looking through my grandmother’s 1920’s scrapbook. A childhood friend of hers, Sylvia Beach, started a famous bookstore on the Left Bank called Shakespeare and Company. She wrote my grandmother that she was going to publish a novel called Ulysses by an Irish writer named James Joyce. She sent this photo of the two of them standing outside her bookstore in 1921. “I believe Ulysses will be considered one of the greatest novels ever written, “ she wrote.
